چکیده

In 2006 a team of undergraduates, including ourselves, developed a software simulation of a two-wheel differential drive robot capable of exploring an unknown environment and building an internal map of its surroundings. This generated map could then be used by the virtual robot to find the shortest path to a target location. This simulation formed the basis of a project undertaken in the summer of 2007 to investigate robot navigation, with the aim of implementing the simulation on an existing physical robot of similar characteristics to the simulated robot. The robot used is a two-wheel differential drive robot, designed and built in 2005 by technicians in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick. However since its construction it has gone relatively unused with little work being carried out on it due to an incomplete and untested control system.
